Their name has since become a meme that refers to any entitled white woman who uses her privilege to take advantage of others.

Karens can be great, but the meme can also be used to denigrate people – particularly women of color and low-income communities. Philadelphia community organizer Gwen Snyder made headlines for criticising it as “a misogynistic way to dismiss working-class women,” leading many to condemn her on Twitter. British feminist commentator Julie Bindel wrote about it being women-hating and class prejudiced, recalling how older white women like Sharon and Tracy from Birds of a Feather were used as code words against young working-class black girls during that era in Britain.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Karen meme has gained significant traction online. Videos showing white women engaging in behavior perceived to be self-serving or racist behavior were labeled Karens on YouTube; for instance one video featured a woman known as “Coughing Karen” coughing on customers at a bagel shop and another named “Central Park Karen” calling the police on a group of black people birdwatching in Manhattan parks.
The name Karen was most prevalent during its peak of popularity in 1965, which makes an average Karen meme an older baby boomer or elderly. This has caused criticisms against it as being both sexist and ageist since it targets a demographic of women already being stereotyped for their behaviors; yet, it has also been used to condemn those exploiting their privilege by using pandemic as an excuse to oppress and harass marginalised groups.
