Over the last year, ‘Karen’ has been derided as an insult for white women perceived to be entitled. This term has been linked to several videos showing white women harassing people of colour.
On Halloweeen, some aren’t thrilled with a ‘Karen’ costume that’s hitting stores. They find it offensive and insensitive.
Dressing like a boss
Whether you’ve recently made the leap up the corporate ladder or wish to raise your status even further, finding a style that matches your new position can be daunting. Fortunately, there are some tried-and-true methods for dressing like an executive.
One way to manage your style is by being conscious of it. Avoid wearing loud or flashy clothing that could distract from work performance; instead opt for neutral-colored garments that fit well and complement your body type.
Another essential ingredient to dressing like a boss is confidence in your style. If people can tell that you don’t feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, they may judge and think less of you.
Confident women have a clear vision and their style reflects that. To be successful in your role as boss, you need to feel as though your outfit won’t get in the way of getting things done.
It can be acceptable to experiment with your wardrobe a bit. Just be sure that you do not go beyond what is allowed under the dress code of your organization.
If you want to add some flair to your style, a blazer is a great option. Not only does it complement suits perfectly, but many women who want to appear sophisticated and authoritative don this trend without fearing to take chances.
You can opt for a bold lip color that draws attention. To make your lips stand out and complete the look, be sure to highlight your cheekbones as well. This will further enhance the overall impact of your ensemble.
Finally, add a dash of metallic to your ensemble. This trend is currently taking over the fashion world and can easily be integrated into your wardrobe.
To complete your outfit, add gold heels and oversized sunglasses. This will give you a polished, commanding appearance that’s ideal for the workplace. To finish it off, carry a neutral-colored bag that will complement all of your pieces perfectly.
Dressing like a diva
Karen is an entitled woman, defined by her sense of entitlement. She expects special treatment and often acts out irrationally due to this belief. Karen may lash out at people without cause, but she usually gets away with it because in her mind she feels helpless to affect others negatively.
She often bends the rules to fit her personal preferences, leading to tyrannical behavior. She is renowned for her extreme racism; she attempts to police how others act and often targets people of color with this attitude.
She often vents her anger on those less fortunate, often using white femininity and perceived frailty to motivate white men to do the ‘dirty work’. Additionally, she uses her social standing as a middle-class white woman to pretend pity for those less fortunate than herself.
Her irrational outbursts can be seen in many popular TV shows, and sometimes real-life examples have even been caught on camera. For instance, a video of a woman blocking the parking space for her own car was shared online and quickly went viral.
The internet has become flooded with parodies and aesthetics of Karen, also known as Karencore. These mocking takes on real-life Karen can be hilarious but also offensive.
Karens may be fun, but they can also be problematic. Many take on a baddie aesthetic where women dress in low-grade fashion to promote MLMs (Mary Kay, Avon, Younique). These Boss Babes tend to be extremely despicable individuals – and their clothes often reflect that.
Fashion enthusiasts should exercise caution when witnessing someone wearing this style, as it does not reflect well on them. Especially those attempting to dress like diva-esque figures may create extremely offensive looks.
Dressing like a rebel
Real Housewives of Potomac cast member Karen Huger recently showed off her designer closet on Instagram, sporting a Burberry trench coat and matching bucket hat on a rainy spring day.
Karen has always had an interest in interior design, having studied it during college. Her favorite fabrics are textures, drapes and handling; as such, Karen enjoys designing clothing that incorporates these qualities.
Karen emphasizes the importance of statement jewelry when styling her outfits. She loves accessorizing with necklaces, belts and shoes for a chic look; Karen particularly enjoys wearing statement pieces like oversized earrings or sunglasses that draw attention to herself.
Her favorite pieces to add to her wardrobe are a mix of high-end and affordable pieces. She appreciates brands offering classic staples for an ageless aesthetic, preferring those focused on craftsmanship and quality over trendy looks.
She tends to have a very narcissistic personality, believing she deserves special treatment and status markers. Unfortunately, this often leads her into situations where she feels powerless and this frustration manifests in her behavior towards others.
Karens unjustified anger is often racist in nature, and she has a tendency to use her white femininity against people of color. This type of aggression can be especially hazardous for women of color as Karens will often call the police over minor inconveniences like having a woman of color sit in her car or seeing a man of color walking by.
This behavior is reminiscent of the original “BBQ Becky” and other white slurs. In the early 2010s, white women used this slur to call police on black people cooking or walking in public places; now known as the “Karen slur”, it has caused much distress among people of color.
Recently, the Karen has become a cultural symbol to highlight the destructive and irrational ways some women treat other people. It can be applied to almost any scenario where someone is being unreasonable – from COVID-19 pandemics and vaccine controversy to social media posts – providing an easy-to-repeat way to criticize someone for being selfish or racist.
Dressing like a princess
Dressing like a princess can be done in many ways, from imitating real-life princesses like Kate Middleton or Princess Diana to dressing like one of Disney’s princesses. But there’s more than just style: confidence, poise, and grace all play an integral role in creating that princess look.
A confident princess is an attractive person, and you can emulate her confidence by walking upright with your shoulders back and head up. Doing this makes you appear more desirable and makes you feel more at ease in public settings.
Cultivate this feeling by smiling at people you encounter and not hiding your smile. Particularly when talking to people in an elevator or subway, try your best to meet their gaze and greet them with a genuine smile.
Create a princess look by wearing classic and timeless clothing that fits properly, such as hats, scarves or gowns.
When selecting a dress to wear, aim for one with flattering shapes that will draw attention to your best features. Opt for clothing that won’t distract from your beauty by covering up, such as sleeveless garments or short skirts.
Clothing that fits perfectly is essential, so consider getting it tailored. You can usually get this done for an affordable price from a local tailor if you shop around.
In addition to clothing, you should also accessorize with princess accessories like tiaras and crowns. These come in an array of styles and colors.
Finally, remember to use cosmetics that won’t overpower your face. Princesses tend to opt for subtle, natural-looking products that highlight their features rather than going all out.
Princesses often opt for clothing that is conservative on the front but open at the back, a look popularized by Princess Diana and suitable for any woman.
