There have been many instances in America when people have been discriminated against by racist Karens. These incidents serve as a reminder that racism remains very much alive in this country today.
The term “Karen” is an insulting derogatory used against white women who are perceived as demanding more than they deserve or entitled to certain things in public. It stems from a racist mindset.
1. A white woman called the police on a black woman and her child
One recent example of racism by Racist Karens can be seen in a video posted last week online showing white woman calling the police on a black woman and her child outside of a Brooklyn deli. The incident was captured by Jason Littlejohn, who posted it to his Facebook page.
This case serves as a prime example of how white women with privilege and anger can use their power to oppress those of color with harsh consequences. While this type of behavior has been around for decades, it has recently gained greater notoriety.
People of color have been treated differently both in the US and globally, particularly due to the coronavirus pandemic that has affected people more than white people. This issue causes great fear among those of color who must deal with its consequences.
Due to this, there has been much anger and discontent among some Americans regarding masks in stores and restaurants. This has spawned a new form of harassment known as the “Karen” phenomenon.
Karens, as they are commonly known, seem entitled to their own way of life and believe their opinions are always correct. They frequently fail to abide by store regulations or policies and become angry when others disagree with them.
They often go to extremes to gain their desired outcome, and can use social media outlets such as Instagram, Twitter or Facebook US:FB to spread this anger among their followers.
The Karen video has become a landmark in the social-media sphere and gained notoriety for being an extreme example of racism that can be expressed publicly. It also serves as evidence that racism is still very much alive today.
This is just one example of racism that must stop. We need to educate people that it’s unacceptable for white people to call the police on people of color and make them feel as if they’re being punished. That’s why it is so essential for everyone to stand up against this type of bigotry and support equal rights for all.
2. A white woman harassed a black woman at a store
Karen may be sexist, but that does not excuse racist behavior. This term isn’t simply for white women; it serves as shorthand to identify certain racially motivated power plays such as using progressive language to avoid responsibility or rapidly changing from an aggressor into a victim in seconds.
It is essential to emphasize that these incidents aren’t exclusive to women, but rather represent an increasing trend of discrimination by racist Karens. These Karens use their privilege to oppress and police other people of color – whether they realize it or not – without accountability.
As the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, racial biases are being exposed. This has led to many taking a closer look at racist Karens and what they stand for.
One example of this phenomenon is a video that went viral this summer, depicting white woman harassing black woman at a store.
This video was recorded at a Gelson’s Market in New York City. The woman screaming at the employee for refusing to let her into the store without wearing a mask demanded by law.
The woman claimed she had a doctor’s note, making her exempt from the store’s policy and disobeying healthcare experts’ recommendations.
Thankfully, another woman stepped in to save the black woman and convince her of leaving the store.
There are countless examples of this, but this particular incident stands as a prime example. It demonstrates how racist Karen can manipulate people’s emotions to make them feel guilty and helpless when they should be standing up to her.
But it also prompts us to reflect on why we should care about these incidents and what can be done to prevent them in the future. To start, educate ourselves about racism behind such behaviors and its repercussions.
If we want to see a change in this kind of behavior, then we must regularly call out racist Karens and other perpetrators of racial exploitative behavior. We must let them know their actions are unacceptable and do not belong in our society – no matter how much we may enjoy laughing at their stories.
3. A white woman harassed a black woman at a restaurant
A video featuring white patrons harassing a Black woman at a Georgia bar has gone viral, garnering much attention on social media and recently being featured on REVOLT TV.
As a Black woman, I understand how challenging it can be to have fun when encountering people who are hostile towards you. That’s why it is essential to document these incidents and stand up against racism.
If a racist person attempts to push you away from a restaurant, you must have the power to speak up and demand justice. That is why video recording such incidents is essential; this way, those responsible can be held accountable and given due attention.
This video, posted to Twitter and viewed by thousands, depicts a Black woman recording herself being harassed by white patrons at Hiram Bar and Grill in Georgia.
This mindset has a long-standing tradition in America and has been used to dehumanize and oppress Black people. It must be challenged and addressed as part of this country’s legacy.
However, Black women often struggle to have these incidents documented and taken seriously. As a result, they must cope with an immense amount of stress and anxiety due to how frequently they are subjected to harassment or assault.
Reports indicate that black people are three times more likely to experience discrimination when dining out than whites are. This issue needs to be addressed by restaurant owners and managers.
One way to ensure this occurs is by making sure all staff members understand the importance of treating every guest with respect – something which many restaurants neglect to do.
Another way to address this problem is for staff members to consult each other about customer service techniques and how they can better serve their guests. Doing this helps avoid such issues from occurring again in the future.
4. A white woman harassed a black woman at a bar
On Sunday, September 18th a woman at Hiram’s Bar and Grill in Georgia responded to patrons who told her it was time to “get out of their white place” by clapping back. Video evidence shows one patron telling the woman to get her own pool table while another insists she needs to leave since it is an establishment for white people only.
The woman’s incident was captured on her cell phone, making the video go viral and sparking debate over both her actions as well as what it means to be Karen.
Sarah Williams, a social media studies researcher who has extensively examined the Karen meme, notes that it originated with an archetype of entitled white woman. Other terms similar to BBQ Becky and Golfcart Gail also emerged in response; these describe white women who use their privilege in public places to demand permission for something.
She notes that the “Karen” meme gained popular acceptance in 2020, during a period of rising racial tensions caused by the Covid-19 virus outbreak – an example of coronavirus. At this point, many white middle class families felt overwhelmed by societal issues like access to healthcare and affordable housing as well as class inequality.
As a result, the white middle class began publicly humiliating Karens for their bad behavior. Karens’ anti-science attitude continued to worsen as they disobeyed state and federal health officials’ advice to quarantine themselves and wear masks in public.
Though it would be inaccurate to attribute all the racial issues of 2020 solely to Karens, these instances serve as a testament to how the internet has transformed our understanding of race. Events that might otherwise go undetected – like Georgia woman calling police on Black man for not wearing mask – became national news stories due to their reach.
But it’s essential to remember that these acts of discrimination weren’t just committed by racist Karens; they are the result of a systemic racism which allows women like these to exist in the first place. That is why it’s so crucial to call out this type of racist harassment when you see it occurring.
