Tiger King
Every few months, a documentary makes waves on streaming services and becomes the next must-see program. Netflix’s Tiger King series provides us with an incredible glimpse into Joe Exotic – otherwise known as the self-styled “Tiger King” who owns an exotic animal park in Oklahoma and was recently arrested for trying to hire hit men to kill animal rights activist Carole Baskin; yet there’s more than meets the eye in his tale.
This documentary covers the entire industry, its various scandals (drug lords, polygamy and cults) as well as its peculiar cast of characters such as Joe Exotic (a gun-toting, mullet-wearing gay redneck who describes himself as country music’s biggest star like Lil Nas X or Trixie Mattel), its inhabitants including Joe’s partners — one is accused of murdering and feeding her husband to their tigers while denying it with an amused smile.
As much as this series focuses on Exotic, its true strength lies in the larger-than-life characters around him – which unfortunately leaves much room for improvement. Exotic’s rivals – featured both on this podcast and in an NY Mag article – are equally captivating characters, being dedicated to their jobs even when pay is inadequate while remaining extremely charismatic individuals that make them difficult to dislike.
As with many reality shows, Tiger King may be too focused on exploiting its subjects for as much value as possible; yet at the same time it offers an intriguing peek into a slice of American life that can’t help but intrigue viewers. Get drawn in by its many diverting plotlines before doing some independent research to decide whether this story really does represent human nature, labor issues and American culture more deeply – an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half!
The Last Dance
As live sports were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and people turned inward, ESPN’s documentary series, The Last Dance became an instant classic. This 10-part series documents Michael Jordan’s championship run with his 1998 NBA team; receiving widespread critical acclaim and earning Emmy recognition for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series. This is a fantastic way to learn more about basketball while understanding why one player made history so famous.
This series was produced and directed by ESPN and Jason Hehir and features interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, along with an eclectic soundtrack encompassing different genres of music spanning different eras in which it takes place – representing classic and contemporary artists in equal measure – making this must-see viewing for any sports fan!
No one could accuse the series of depicting Jordan in an inaccurate light; rather, it simply chose to focus on aspects most relevant to its telling. While its greatest success lies in depicting Jordan’s fame at that time, its greatest shortcoming lies in failing to pose relevant questions regarding his legacy.
Much sports media has been inspired by The Last Dance and, while this has resulted in some vanity series about iconic athletes, most retain an objective viewpoint – with ESPN’s 30 for 30series serving as an excellent model for years.
The Last Dance has an engaging feel, yet fails to fully capitalize on its access and format advantages. Instead, it often falls flat without much of the dynamic character seen in other ESPN documentaries.
The Last Dance may not be perfect, but any sports fan should still watch it. It features outstanding acting from its cast of characters and soundtrack, not to mention some truly astonishing moments in the ring that offer insight into MJ’s rise to stardom. This film provides an incredible way to understand his life story.
