Recent social media trends have created the term “Karen” to denote entitled white women who use racism and privilege to exploit service workers or those they perceive as lower status in their daily lives.
But sometimes these privileged ladies go too far. Karen was discovered with an arrogant attitude and unfounded hatred towards science.
1. Threatening to Make a Plane Do an Emergency Landing
Karens are a type of customer who defies social norms and manners with little to no consequences. They yell at workers, refuse to leave establishments until they get what they want, and generally behave rudely.
They often harass other customers by calling them names, cursing at them, and shouting in their face.
Recently, one woman traveling on a Jetstar Japan flight experienced an near-disaster when she and other passengers received a bomb threat from another passenger. When they called the airline to report it, an inflight announcement warned people that an emergency landing would take place shortly, according to Kyodo News.
After an emergency landing, the airline released a statement saying they could not verify whether the threat was credible. They noted they had notified police of the situation, who promptly arrested the man.
Ultimately, personal opinion is irrelevant. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that some of these individuals may be borderline insane.
Another person decided to share a story about Karen who had an unpleasant dining experience at a restaurant. She was having a particularly difficult day and wasn’t pleased with the service she received.
When she requested to speak with a manager, she was given incorrect information and began shouting and complaining about her experience.
This is just another example of the rudeness these individuals can be, and their ability to get away with it is truly shocking. Such conduct should never be tolerated and must never be accepted.
Thankfully, there are people willing to help these individuals with their problems. This young manager demonstrated that they could handle even the most bizarre requests from customers and still manage well.
2. Trying to Takedown Others
Karens can become very aggressive when they don’t get what they want from a business, whether it be an employee or patron in the restaurant. This can be dangerous since Karens often take people down in front of others and attack them while on the ground.
When facing off against an enemy, there are a variety of defenses you can employ to keep yourself from being taken down. Utilizing these defensive techniques will make the fight much less stressful and reduce the risk of becoming injured in the process.
For example, you can use a guillotine choke to lock down an opponent. These effective and secure holds while on the ground are known as Peruvian or ninja chokes and they both work just as well.
These takedowns can be especially dangerous for those unfamiliar with martial arts. That is why it is essential to learn how to defend yourself from these types of attacks.
To perform a takedown, the attacker must grab you by one or both legs and move your body weight up towards them, forcing you into a clinch position.
Alternatively, they may attempt to drag you onto the ground by your waist. This type of takedown is the most frequent and easily avoidable if you know how to fight back effectively.
In many cases, Karens will use their white privilege to subjugate people of color. This could be done through threats to call the police on them or making racist remarks and acting as though they are the victims of violence. It’s especially dangerous when people think that being targeted simply because they are people of color leads them to act out or behave in an unhealthy way.
3. Verbally Assaulting a Server
This week, video of a Karen verbally assaulting a server at HMS Bounty restaurant in Los Angeles went viral on social media. The woman, identified as Vanessa Alatorre, physically and verbally attacked a man after being instructed to wear a mask by staff members at the eatery. As a result, Alatorre has since been fired from her job, according to reports.
This incident illustrates the type of behavior typically witnessed among “Karens,” defined as middle class white women who claim not to be aware of their privilege and use it against those lower on the socioeconomic scale. This term gained notoriety in recent years after stories of such behaviors began appearing online.
These entitled women expect special treatment that they do not deserve and often abuse employees trying to deliver their services. Furthermore, they have been known for bullying retail and restaurant workers, acting out with little respect for others and having public tantrums over minor inconveniences.
Though this behavior is prevalent across a variety of contexts, gaming communities seem particularly susceptible to it. If you find yourself dealing with someone who exhibits such behaviors, take immediate action!
One way to address harassment is simply by helping the individual who’s being harassed. Doing this will help them understand that their behavior isn’t normal and should stop before it escalates any further.
Another example is calling the police if you believe someone is being discriminated against or abused due to their race, gender, or sexual orientation. While this may be a risky tactic, it’s an effective way to draw attention to these issues and motivate people to change their behavior.
4. Hoarding Toilet Roll
People around the world were becoming anxious about an impending coronavirus pandemic that would begin in March, and many began stockpiling necessities – often, this meant buying toilet paper.
In some countries, the shortage of toilet paper was so severe that supermarkets ran out of product in the initial weeks after the pandemic began. Even in Australia – which had not been affected by the pandemic – shoppers scrambled to acquire any rolls they could as fears mounted about its spread.
Some of these individuals were likely just trying to replenish their stores, while others hoarded supplies in order to have enough for an extended period. It appears they acted out of fear and concern for their families.
Researchers have discovered that those who hoarded toilet paper during the COVID-19 pandemic experienced greater anxiety and fear of contracting the virus, potentially explaining their behavior. Furthermore, they displayed greater conscientiousness and emotional stability than those who didn’t hoard during this crisis.
These findings suggest that hoarding of toilet paper is distinct from other hoarding behaviors, and further investigation should explore whether personality traits associated with hoarding differ between these two subtypes. Furthermore, more work needs to be done in order to understand how social media has contributed to the development of this behavior.
As with many psychiatric disorders, there are multiple factors that can contribute to hoarding behaviors. Social cognitive biases (Sim et al., 2020) and the COVID-19 pandemic (Kirk & Rifkin, 2020) have been noted as two of the most influential. Furthermore, researchers have noted a bandwagon effect and explored how social pressures or coping mechanisms may play a role in hoarding during stressful circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic.
5. Skipping Socially Distanced Queues
Karens are middle-aged white women who act entitled and rude, expecting special treatment they don’t deserve. They frequently gossip in public and become irate over minor inconveniences.
They can be found in a variety of places, such as restaurants, stores and other service industries. Unfortunately, they can be an irritation to employees and sometimes their children as well. Expectations are high when dealing with these individuals; they become angry if not given what they want and hold strongly-held views about vaccinations or public behavior.
Some of their most infamous behaviors include terrorizing services workers, refusing to follow rules and regulations and using false victimhood as a weapon to retaliate against authority figures who deny them what they believe they are entitled to. These patterns of conduct can result in physical as well as psychological harm.
The term “Karen” emerged as a popular online slang expression to identify and challenge those who act entitled or demanding. This trend can be attributed to an increased understanding of privilege and entitlement issues, particularly as they relate to race and gender.
Therefore, gaming communities have adopted the term as an effective means to address this issue and call out those who may be behaving inappropriately in their space. Doing so allows gamers to quickly recognize entitled or demanding behavior and take steps to prevent it.
Some posters have suggested that “Karen” is actually not a real person but rather an honorific rank that Karens must reach in order to earn this title. This theory makes sense and deserves consideration.
