Karen has come to be associated with angry, racist middle-aged white women who enforce social rules on others. These individuals often exhibit rudeness when asking managers questions and demand complaints be made against them.
But this social media trend has taken on a life of its own, becoming an emblem for online shaming that many Karens feel the need to change their names or even their identities.
1. Leah Dillard.
Over the past week, videos of white women being accused of racism have gone viral. Some of these incidents are so shocking, it feels like watching a reality TV show. You can’t help but wonder if these women aren’t actually causing themselves harm by feeling judged for their decisions.
The identitarian movement that birthed this movement has transformed racism into an act of religious judgment, making it impossible to refute the charge with reason or logic. As a result, many people feel as if they are being punished for things that weren’t their fault in the first place.
One woman who experienced such humiliation was a 67-year-old grandmother shopping in her town. While in line, the cashier called out her name “Karen,” while also making jokes about being an “aristocratic Karen.”
When she shouted back at them, they shoved her away. Later, the woman posted a video online of the harassment but admitted to still being in shock.
Karens face these kinds of incidents on a regular basis, though not always for racial reasons. Yet they can be incredibly challenging to cope with because they seem so innocuous; it can be easy for women like Karen to feel like they’re being treated as less than human.
Some women become overwhelmed by the amount of negative attention directed at them. They doubt if they can handle it, and it seems as if everyone around them has contempt for them.
Some people attempt to be helpful by saying something like, “Don’t worry, Karen is a good person–not like those other ones.” Unfortunately, this only serves to validate the shaming and adds fuel to the fire.
Finally, it is up to each of us to stand up against these racial bullying and harassment attacks. It’s our duty to speak out when we see it, and to call out the racist trend created by this identitarian movement.
