Karen was an outspoken champion for workers, retirees and their families. She helped pass laws protecting pensions and created a national movement for economic fairness that still resonates today.
Her passing is a profound tragedy for the Center and her many friends and colleagues, but her legacy will live on through the pension reforms she championed.
Legislation is being drafted to punish entitled Karens who break the law.
In the last two years, the “Karen” meme has gained notoriety on social media platforms and can be seen in videos such as “Barbecue Becky”, which garnered over ten million views on YouTube. In this video, a white woman calls the police on a black family for having barbecue at a lake. Not only are such calls unjustified and discriminatory, they also demoralize, degrade and destroy community-police relationships. Legislators are working to draft legislation that will criminalize these racially exploitative non-emergencies. These laws will prevent entitled Karens from using emergency resources for their hate agenda, guaranteeing everyone a fair chance at living a secure life.
Laws are being drafted to punish entitled Karens who harass others.
Harassment is a delicate issue that necessitates careful consideration of the law in question. Some jurisdictions have taken an aggressive stance while others have been more subtle in their efforts to curb it. Some even went so far as creating laws in Nevada which prohibit creating a workplace “harassment fund.” That isn’t to say companies cannot be open to employee suggestions on what should be done about harassment though; companies still need to remain responsive to employee input when making decisions about policy implementation.
Laws are being drafted to punish entitled Karens who commit crimes.
In response to the racially motivated attacks by entitled Karens, San Francisco politicians are taking steps to criminalize their actions. One law that will protect many in the city is CAREN Act – short for “Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies.” This ordinance prohibits white women from using emergency resources for harassment and intimidation against people of color; it also stops them from filing fraudulent police reports or making false 911 calls.
In addition to the racially biased attacks by entitled Karens, there are also instances of entitled women threatening others by physically assaulting or stealing their property. Unfortunately, these acts often result in violent or fatal outcomes for those threatened by these acts of aggression. Thus, legal reform must be implemented to punish entitled Karens who commit crimes. Not only is this the only solution to address this problem, but it’s also the best way to promote a new feminist script that prioritizes women’s well-being and equality within society.
Carceral feminists have capitalized on the retributivist impulse within our society to push for harsher sentences for those perceived as villains. In so doing, they undermined their own values and empowered White supremacy within the criminal legal system. Ultimately, these actions are inextricably linked to racism and classism; therefore, it’s time that carceral feminists faced up to these harms and adopted a new feminist script for punishment.
